“So are you gonna’ check out the strip club after this? Chase some girls around?” I inquired.

Cue blank stare.

I mean, it seemed like other bachelor parties I’d attended before… at the time. But looking at this picture in hindsight, I’m unsure how I was unable to tell we had inadvertently joined a gay bachelor party.

Yesterday I met up with an old friend from Peace Corps in Frankfurt. He told me of these beer bikes he’d read about, a bar on wheels where each seat has pedals. Patrons motor the bar around town and swill beer at the same time.

We were in the Sachsenhausen neighborhood when one passed. I assumed it was just a random group of people and so we flagged it down and they let us hop on. There was a lot of laughing and backslapping and joy. We drank beers, cruised the streets and had a dandy time.

At the end of the ride we hopped off and drank a few more beers with the gang. I realized that the bachelor was wearing a nurse outfit and no pants. All of the other party goers were using a mirror attached to a stick to look up his skirt. I thought this was a bit different, but chalked it up to cultural differences.

That’s the beauty of being some place new. You see something and you work on assumptions that might be wrong. But to fit in, you play along and see how things turn out.

And it all turned out just fine. It was a great group of people and we had a good time. Though it should be noted that in this photo you cannot see the bald guy who had tethered himself to our sturdy legs.
