There was a time when downtown business districts were clamoring to create cute fiberglass animals. Artists would come in and decorate them on the cheap. The sculptures would be scattered around town bringing mirth and excitement to all the land. After the passage of time, and numerous tourist photos taken and shared, the animals would be sold to collectors who wanted artistic fiberglass forms for their very own and  proceeds were donated to worthy charities (after paying royalties to the people who hold the rights to these sort of deals).

It all began in 1986 with a parade of lions in Zurich, which begat Cows on Parade in Madison and Buddy Bears in Berlin, Elephant Parades in Copenhagen and even Guitarmania in Cleveland. And lest we forget the notorious and beloved Beasties in Milwaukee (Rumor has it that old Steve Marcus wants to resurrect something similar for the town soon! Hot!)

And this grand tradition continues to this very day.

Here I am in Dortmund with a winged rhinoceros. Why a winged rhinoceros you ask? I don’t know. I didn’t bother to look it up. What I like most was that in this case Dortmund decided to skip the whole art project/charity thing and go straight down the path of weird billboard thing.

Need some natural healing? Hans A. Dirks is your man.
