It’s not been the same since ‘selfie‘ became Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year. I’ve been running this show since 2009 or so I think. And now it just feels like a cheap gimmick. Damn it people! I was narcissistic well before it was even cool and way before it was so fashionable (this is likely an exaggeration).

But for serious, if there is anything that the Internet has made suckier, it’s dictionaries. There is little that compares to the joy of digging up a word in a big, old, dusty book.

And now the dictionary magnates are like all the other strumpets in the scrum scrambling for attention on the WWW. So we end up with these lame-o headline grabbing ‘word-of-the-year’ things, which isn’t so much about adding  or contributing anything of significance to the lexicon, but more about making sure people remember there used to be a book that you had to crack to learn a word or two.

In honor of this moment, I extend my middle finger to the folks at Oxford and I  grant you, dear reader, three words gathered at random while flipping the pages of my old Random House Webster’s College Dictionary from 1995.

#1 – opened up to ‘la-‘ and we have:

lar•ri•kin (lari kin) n. Australian. a hoodlum [1865-70 orig. uncert.]

#2 – opened up to ‘fu-‘ and there we find:

fust•i•gate (fusti gat), v.t. -gat•ed, -gat•ing. 1. to cudgel; beat 2. to criticize harshly; castigate. [1650-60; <LL fustigatus, ptp. of fustigare to cudgel, der. of L fustis cudgel]

#3 – opened up to ‘an-‘ and for the final word:

an•o•mie or an•o•my (anə me‘), n. a condition of an individual or of society characterized by a breakdown or absence of norms and values or a sense of dislocation and alienation [1930-35; < F < Gk anonmia lawlessness] – a•nom•ic (ə nomik), adj.

And to now a sentence that sums it all up:

It is my belief that the larrikins at Oxford should be fustigated with a wet noodle for their contribution to the strong sense of anomie looming over us all. God save our souls and protect our curiosity that it may not be so easily sated.

Note: This photo was taken on top of a castle in Angers, France. A place I never thought about visiting, but is quite nice. Thanks Alexandra, Willy and Mia.

  1. […] ‘Kyle in Front of Things‘ seemed clever when it was kicked off. Now with the dubious rise of selfies, maybe it’s all just a bit too vapid, vain and vacuous (shout out to my old boss at […]
