There’s a convention for everything; a gathering for every interest. Last week I attended a convention for vending machines in Cologne. For real, people hanging out in suits showing how their newest model could smoothly transfer goods into a receptacle and eventually to your hand with nary a splash. There was even a machine that sold sausages and meatballs.

One display had booth babes and a video screen on loop showing how much abuse their machine could take without breaking down or giving up its precious cache of change or goodies. It was a strange scene there in the overcooled convention center air, filled with trucked in carpeting, and expensive displays, and the way people gather together to sell machines that remove people from the purchase process.  Is there a vending machine for vending machines?

And while there I thought to myself, ‘Yeah, I go to the Specialty Coffee Association of America’s annual shindig every year because that’s actually cool, that’s where great people hang out and we really talk about interesting stuff.’*

*Which in hindsight is every bit as weird as this.
