I stood naked at the window, five walnuts in hand. It was 7am and I could see them gorging themselves on my cherries. But we weren’t about to allow a repeat of last year. Those starlings, these pigeons, those oversized doves that flap to the window every morning received their come-uppance. A walnut to the head to save our sweet cherries.

The first year’s harvest was splendid (click to read more). I worked up the nerve to ask Cetin if I could pick the cherries from his tree. The second year had little and what was there was devoured by ravenous birds. This year we could not be stopped. It’s a timely reminder of how time passes and one year is here and before you know it, promises are broken and you’re back up on that moss-covered trunk filling your goodie bag.
