There’s a pond in the Kettle Moraine.

It’s an idyllic spot surrounded by droopy pines and other trees that occasionally fall in. At the head is a well house, a brick circle, where water swells up from the earth and feeds the pond. The cool, clear water eventually spills over a dam at the other end.

Plentiful hiding places in the pond and a gravel bottom in the well house make the perfect spawning ground for brown trout, which swim lazily through the waters. This is a place where swarthy men, like me, visit with some frequency to think. Actually, the best part is that I’m usually alone here. Neither swarthy men, nor buxom lasses frequent this respite. Which is kind of nice.
