The Youth Memorial Building in Mayville, Wis., is where we held all of our 4-H meetings. It’s looking in pretty rough shape now, but back then it was a welcome respite from the farm at least once a month. Each meeting was really just a precursor to the  home made treats and Kool-Aid in paper cups that followed. And rampant, rambunctious rounds of Tag, Hide-n-Seek, Ghost in the Graveyard, etc. on the surrounding grounds.

I never really realized how idyllic the name of this building was. It was one of those places with a name that had no meaning; it was just where we held our meetings, there at the Youth Memorial Building.

But now looking back from age 34, I realize it really has become a memorial to youth. A well-worn, slightly shambly sort of place where now-grown kids can see visions of themselves 20 years younger in grass-stained jeans and hand-me-down shirts.
