One of the best museums in Barcelona is the Museu de Carrosses Pompes Fúnebras, a well-organized, nicely-presented testament to how dead people were carted around in the past. It’s a ways away from the center of town in the basement of the place where everyone in Barcelona goes when they pass.

It’s not highly touted, but appears on tourist maps.

I met a woman at the desk who looked at her watch when I asked if the museum was open. She gave a hesitating nod, said something to her co-worker and then asked me to follow along.

It’s a free tour and you can ask the woman any question you want. When you say things like, “People don’t put so much work into anything nowadays, do they?” she will nod solemnly.

And it’s really true. These old carts were chiseled down to the most minute detail. Even on the undercarriage. Even the black buggies for peasants and paupers were amazing with subtle detail. And then the car comes along and makes them all obsolete. Granted the old Plymouth they had there with curved rear windows and wings was pretty amazing, but then take a look at what we get to ride in now.

They wouldn’t even last as long as a person.

*Last time in front of the dead.
