And on this night we found ourselves in Farmington, NM, a town filled with pawn shops and laundromats, neon-decorated muffler shops and family night fun time at the Skate Away. Roller rinks loomed large in my mind as a child.

I remember a vivid dream when in kindergarten. Friendship pins were popular at the time – small safety pins, the kind you used on diapers, decorated with colored beads and given to someone special to denote everlasting friendship.

I was at a rink and the disco lights were spinning. Something like ‘Funky Town’ was cascading down from the speakers and I was rolling with friends in a shirt completely covered in decorated pins. It was light and it was easy and everyone was laughing and having a good time. I only ever had five or six of the pins before they went out of style, but on this night in Farmington that dream fell back into my head with the first tones of ‘Funky Town.’

God knows they haven’t changed playlists at roller rinks in over 20 years.
